Already considered one of the best hospitals and international destination for complex care, Mayo Clinic was planning the next chapter for its flagship campus in Rochester, Minnesota. The aspiration was not just to build a new, larger hospital, but lay the foundation for the a new century of healthcare leadership - to become a platform for medical innovation.
Cactus worked alongside Foster + Partners, CannonDesign, and Mayo Clinic’s Unbound team to define the digital/physical ‘big bets’ that would achieve this ambition, identifying a digital experience strategy that elevates the unique equities of the Mayo Clinic brand, mission, and culture.
This work supported the $5 billion budget approval from the Board of Trustees in late 2023.

Our team identified an experience strategy that didn’t just prepare for the future of technology, but elevated the unique equities of the Mayo Clinic brand, mission, and culture: radical care team collaboration, hope through humanity, and healthcare without bounds. To fuel collaboration, we designed care spaces that allowed physicians to work together, in-person, across campus or around the world. The building was designed to act as a member of the care team, anticipating staff needs, arming them with the information and supplies needed in real time.
