Backend Developer

We are looking for a Backend Developer that builds full-stack web and mobile applications to join our remote team. Cactus is a fast-paced interdisciplinary design studio that will require you to be nimble, self-motivated, and hands-on. We offer a competitive compensation package based on experience and qualifications. The salary range for this position is $100,000 to $180,000 annually, with additional benefits, bonuses, and incentives. The final salary offer will be determined based on the candidate’s experiences, skills, and fit for the role.

• Develop software for our clients, shipping work daily within a healthy SDLC.
• Collaborate with our growing engineering team across a variety of projects. You may be the single engineer on a project, or working on a much larger team. If alone, we’ll make sure you’re not working in a silo continuously and have the support you need to succeed.
• Work to ensure a high code quality with tests and documentation. This is a priority for working with digital healthcare products.
• Evaluate and communicate engineering solutions and trade-offs with teammates and other, potentially non-technical teams.
• Collaborate with our Strategy, Design, Product, and Architecture teams on building world class digital products and experiences.

• You act with foresight. You plan ahead and mitigate risks in advance.
• You identify what’s important to fight distraction. You keep the end goal in mind and prioritize accordingly.
• You walk in the client’s shoes. Whether it’s the client or the end user, you build products to meet all user needs.

• 6+ years of professional experience building full-stack web and mobile applications.
• 6+ years with expansive knowledge of multiple languages (such as JavaScript and Python) and frameworks (such as Node and Django)
• 4+ years working with cloud infrastructure tools such as AWS, GCP, or Microsoft Azure.
• Ability to collaborate with our front-end engineering team building native mobile applications, along with our API engineers working on integrations with 3rd party health systems.
• Willingness to write clean, scalable, and tested code within a team.
• Familiarity with database best practices, with both noSQL and SQL-related datastores. Our clients use a mix of databases for the type of data and therefore offer them flexibility as needed.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice to have:

• Experience shipping applications to a variety of user personas in healthcare, such as payers, patients, and providers of care.
• Experience working within HIPAA guidelines, handling PHI, and developing with FHIR standards.
• Experience working within an agency environment across a variety of clients ranging from national health systems to early-stage startups. You may be client-facing at times, but are not required to be fully as we’d like to protect your “headphones on” time to build great software.
