With a new headquarters in Sao Paulo and plans to open locations across the region, Starbucks was looking to make a major, permanent public statement. The team in Brazil had begun plans for a flagship cafe in the historic public outdoor lobby area of the iconic Gazeta Building. They tapped Cactus to design and build a system that would re-imagine and update that historic space for the present day and beyond.
Cactus envisioned a massive collaborative art canvas. A kind of digital, iterative graffiti surface. The arrangement of the screens emphasizes the idea of broadcast, tying to the historic use and design of the building.
The screens radiate out onto the street below beckoning pedestrians to enter, engage, and relax. Visitors are able to interact with, manipulate, and collaborate with the installation as well as other visitors.
