Lab100
The future of data-powered medical research and patient care, designed from the ground up.
In an era where machine learning, connected devices, and AI will make as much of an impact in personal health as the traditional checkup, what does the patient experience look and feel like?
Cactus was tasked by a group of visionary doctors at Mount Sinai’s Institute for Next Generation Care to create a new space and experience that was both effective for medical research and compelling enough to attract patients to participate in bringing this vision of the future to life.
Instead of going the typical clinical research route with recruited trial participants in an uninspired lab environment, Cactus flipped the script to create a first-of-its-kind hybrid clinic and research center that empowers patients with an unprecedented personal health assessment while also providing researchers with a rich set of health data and an environment for innovation.
Cactus collaborated with doctors and researchers to conceive, brand, design, and build a completely new type of medical space from the ground up. As a clinic, Lab100 provides patients with extraordinary access to a medical professional and educational tools to understand their personal health metrics. As a research center, the space equips scientists with longitudinal multi-scale health data and a testbed environment to develop, validate, and deploy new products and services.
We designed the Lab100 experience to expand patient agency using two ingredients: best-in-class data and the educational, interactive elements needed to offer a deep understanding of what that data means.
The journey begins at home within a digital application that allows patients to begin populating their health profile through a series of best-in-class assessments.
An interactive assessment experience that is both comprehensive and illuminating.
The space features 8 gamified testing stations that display real-time test results alongside educational content to help patients understand what was being tested, and why.
As patients engage each assessment station, the digitally-enabled room automates health data collection, interpretation, and visualization.
The experience culminates in a signature moment of doctor and patient connection. With the physician unburdened by paperwork and data-entry, they are able to fully engage with the patient and review the assessment results, telling a cohesive health story through digestible and memorable data visualizations.
Our architectural approach was modular by design to allow the Mount Sinai team to easily replicate, expand, and evolve the space. New med tech innovations could be easily incorporated and validated in a clinical setting, helping to speed up innovations implementation into clinic practice.
The clinic’s layout and operational flow was iteratively developed and tested to ensure a first-class patient experience and frictionless hardware integrations.
"I thought Cactus was overpromising, but then they over delivered. It was incredible to see their dedication throughout the whole process."
The Lab100 name and brand are designed to signal fresh vibrance, scientific advancement, and uncomplicated approachability.
Impact
Lab100 garnered multiple design awards, both national news and medical industry press coverage, and earned Mount Sinai hospital a massive uplift in brand impression. It has also inspired a new generation of researchers and doctors to consider the role of design in preventive medical innovation.
