Brazilian Pavilion
Projection mapping and purpose-built architecture immerse desert visitors in lush Brazilian landscapes.
The World Expo is known for its futuristic and thought-provoking installations, and the Expo 2020 Dubai is no exception. The desire was to bring attendees and guests into the midst of Brazil’s natural beauty, offer a shady and cool respite from the heat of the desert day, and dazzle with a must-see experience at night.
Cactus collaborated with MMBB, JPG.ARQ and BEN-AVID Architects to design a structure and courtyard that is entirely encompassed in a sheer translucent fabric. From there, Cactus transformed the pavilion through an intricate system of 140+ projectors, mapped meticulously across a customized 24,800 sq. ft. enclosure that would solve for the multi-purpose nature of the courtyard throughout the end of the day and overnight.
The minimalist structure was wrapped in a bespoke, translucent fabric, a membrane to balance access to and protection from the natural surroundings. This fabric serves as the perfect canvas for immersive content.
The shaded space provides a respite from the heat of Dubai, inviting visitors to walk through the shallow reflective pool at the heart of the pavilion, replenished by reclaimed water.
As the sun sets, the pavilion transforms into an immersive 360° audiovisual experience celebrating Brazil’s rich culture and it’s diverse ecosystems.
